Nelson-Huffington Post : I am so sick and tired of RACE
I agree.
In her article at the Huffington Post, Sophia A. Nelson, an african american political/social commentary opinion writer, outlines her thoughts on the divisiveness that comes from Race.
Nelson’s peice, Jeanine Garafolo on Racism — Why She is Way off Base, describes Garafolo’s comments on CNBC regarding the recent Tea Party demonstrations:
Ms. Garofalo actually called Party-goers “a bunch of teabagging rednecks,” adding “this is about hating a black man in the White House. This is racism straight up.”
Then passionately argues against them:
Yes, I am defending my mostly white (some Tea Party goers were black, Hispanic, etc.) Tea Party attending brethren because enough is enough.
Further:
“I am sick of the tearing apart of one set of Americans by their own fellow countrymen.”
I agree, we’ve got to get this thing together, collectively, on all sides of the color barrier.
The word racism is hurled about so much as to make the subject almost taboo. Thing is, whether white, black, chinese, or polka dot, race is a part of who we are as individuals. We should accept each others race, just as easily as we’d accept one’s hair color, or shoe size.
It just shouldn’t be that damn important, or divisive.
If America collectively could learn one thing this year I wish that it would be this:
Race/racisim is not a weapon.
You shouldn’t arm yourself with it, you shouldn’t have to defend against it.
What do you think? Idealist?
