What does it mean to be an educated black man?
I watched a 60 minutes story on NBA basketball star LeBron James last night. I was impressed. So impressed that I started to think more about what it means to be an educated black man.

From Wikipedia, “LeBron Raymone James (born December 30, 1984 in Akron, Ohio) …. professional basketball player for the Cleveland Cavaliers of the NBA…promoted in the national media as a future NBA superstar while still a sophomore at St. Vincent - St. Mary’s. At just 18,…number one pick in the 2003 NBA draft…signed a US$90 million shoe contract with Nike before his professional debut.”
LeBron has only received his high school diploma. From his interview, I received the impression he isn’t just a fabulously successful basketball star. I wonder, “Should I consider LeBron an educated black man?”
On one hand, he doesn’t have a degree, technically-out. However, there was definitely something about him that seemed a cut above. He was thoughtful. He was articulate. He was humble despite his success. He wasn’t overly dressed or jeweled, just some jeans and shirt. He seems to have made some good business decisions, (as if signing “Yes” to 90M isn’t enough).
So is that it? A few good 60 minutes sound bytes and you’re in? Can’t be.
