Guilty of education
Two weeks ago a commenter, CP, posed a question to in response to my February post, Why EducatedBlackMan.com?
CP writes, “I understand the idea, but how do you reconcile that guilt when you look another brother in the eye who didn’t have the opportunity that we had, but is still a positive representative of black men? Is there a way we can reset stereotypes without dividing our...
Nelson-Huffington Post : I am so sick and tired of...
I agree.
In her article at the Huffington Post, Sophia A. Nelson, an african american political/social commentary opinion writer, outlines her thoughts on the divisiveness that comes from Race.
Nelson’s peice, Jeanine Garafolo on Racism — Why She is Way off Base, describes Garafolo’s comments on CNBC regarding the recent Tea Party demonstrations:
Ms. Garofalo actually called...
Major League Baseball honors Jackie Robinson
As part of the Arizona State Unversity Black Alumni Chapter (I’m the treasurer), I’ll be attending the Jackie Robinson day activities at the Arizona Diamondbacks home game today. The D-backs graciously reached out to the ASUBA, and together we’ve worked to bring black honorees from ASU onto the field to celebrate.

Uh..whoops
First,
Barack Obama agrees to speak at Arizona State University’s commencement.
However,
It appears that ASU won’t award Obama with an honorary degree when he does.
But wait,
It seems this is all a misunderstanding.
Undoubtedly,
ASU’s new scholarship may help ease the embarassment.
Whoops.

Roger Ferguson Jr - a black quantitative analyst...
Last week I introduced you to two black quantitative analysts. In a cliffhanger of a post, I promised to finish the rest of the introduction Monday. Sorry to have kept you waiting. Here’s 1/2 of the rest of what I think is a very interesting story.
This bespectacled fellow is Roger Ferguson, Jr., President and Chief Executive Officer of TIAA-CREF, (the Teachers Insurance and Annuity...
Watching the sitcom ‘How I met your mother,’ I heard the term “African Canadian.” First reaction: That’s not a real word (is it?)!

What do you think of the Blackbird browser that provides African American related content on the Internet? http://www.educatedblackman.com/
A web browser for blacks?
Depending on your ‘techie’-ness, you may know there are many web browsers available to guide you in your travels across the net. Popular internet browsers include Internet Explorer, Google Chrome, Opera, and Firefox to name a few. While these browsers are customizable, for instance you can add and remove features, personalize your settings, etc., one company believes the...

What does it mean to be an educated black man?
I watched a 60 minutes story on NBA basketball star LeBron James last night. I was impressed. So impressed that I started to think more about what it means to be an educated black man.
From Wikipedia, “LeBron Raymone James (born December 30, 1984 in Akron, Ohio) …. professional basketball player for the Cleveland Cavaliers of the NBA…promoted in the national media as a future...
Letter to the President
Dear Mr. President, In regards to a recent article in the Washington Post (http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2009/03/23/AR2009032303201.html)…this economic bailout plan continues to spiral in a direction that seems more and more less becoming for the average American and more and more lucrative for the powers that be. Honestly, I have to tell you, I’m not really...
two quantitative analysts - yes, you heard me.
Dismayed like everyone about the AIG mess (bonuses!), I spent some time looking for a black quantitative analyst to interview. Why? Quantitative analysts are Ph.D’s who, among other things, create algorithms that help assess financial risk.
I surfed many sites, sent many emails, made many calls. From the Journal of Financial and Quantitative Analysis, to the Association for Behavior...
Do you know Mike?
No matter perceived differences, all people are connected (I’ll spare you my usual uplifting speech..this time). With that mindset, this St. Patrick’s day I wondered about connections between African Americans and the Irish.
I didn’t find what I thought I was looking for, say a world famous, educated, Irish, African American figure (should’ve been easy right?), but I did...

Kidding. The headline may be made up, but the article on Obama’s Irish heritage is real.
Excerpt from Politico -
Obama’s roots have Irish eyes smiling “Irish Americans say they’re still waiting for Barack Obama to embrace another influential figure from his past: his great-great-great-grandfather Falmouth Kearney.”

New America Media, Commentary, Michael Wotorson
A momentous election and a huge stimulus check for school improvement must mean that things are looking pretty good for high school students of color these days.

The Dwindling Digital Divide?
The “Digital Divide” describes the separation between those who have internet access and those who don’t. This issue is a slow and silent killer - if you thought the disparity in education was bad, wait.
As more products, services, and information become available thorough the net, those without internet access fall further behind in opportunities. Addressing this issue was so...
Alan Keyes on the "radical" President Obama:
”Obama is a radical communist…He is going to destroy this country, and we are either going to stop him or the United States of America is going to cease to exist.”
Wow. Keyes is quite the radical himself, part of what makes this country great is his freedom to be radical.
He’s a graduate of Cornell University, should we send him a shirt?

Double fist bump with cheese, please.
It started with a fist bump and ended with stupidity. Unless you were in a coma, you saw or heard about it; Barack and Michelle Obama fist-bumped during a televised campaign speech. Huffington Post informed us, “Obama Fist-Bump Rocks The Nation!, the Washington Post told us it was “the fist bump heard ‘round the world,” and FOX news questioned it as a “terrorist fist...

Why EducatedBlackMan.com?
Reset stereotypes
I’ve felt for some time that Black male stereotypes, both from outside black culture and from within, were in need of resetting. The original idea of how to do that was simple.
Initiate Change - with a T-shirt
Not just any T-shirt though, a limited edition tee shirt. This is the first design, based on my personal love of higher education. Despite its challenges, higher...

What is it again?
EducatedBlackMan.com (or EBM). The general ideas is a community-powered current affairs and culture magazine for the college educated black man. The site would have an ecommerce section offering unique, relevant, appealing products. EBM combines content and commerce with social activism, using part of its profits to sponsor philanthropic activities. EBM is slate.com + digg.com for the educated...
